I saw a post on LinkedIn yesterday stating that cover letters are a waste of time. I absolutely disagree. Given that we are living in an era of companies regularly “ghosting” applicants and even some who have already gone through the interview process, things are beyond frustrating for job seekers.
But shortchanging yourself is not the answer. Taking shortcuts doesn’t work, and as I’ve said before, following the exact same advice that everyone else may be following is a bad move. It robs you of your own independent thinking.
In my opinion, cover letters are a great way to see a person’s communication and writing style. I love them. I believe it’s still an open forum to tell your story and set yourself apart.
Assuming it won’t be read is a mistake. And so what if it isn’t. Cover letters allow you to flex a much-needed muscle, which is telling your own story. Positioning yourself as a prime candidate through a cover letter is still an important part of the process.
